This is why I’ve been an ingrate
I wanted to talk to you about gratitude because I don’t know what it means, do you?
I’ve looked it up in the dictionary, multiple dictionaries. I’ve looked up . I’ve looked up origins and etymology of the words gratitude, appreciation and thankfulness, and they all are synonyms with subtle variations.
The interesting thing is I was pondering for the last week or so: have I ever really felt that way except on rare occasions?
If I’m quite honest with you, in all my decades on this earth it was never real to me. Even though I understood intellectually the definition, not until this morning did I realize and truly get it, finally, and here’s how that happened.
My good friend Dr. Terri Levine gifted me something very special and instantly I reacted and made a donation to the Terri Levine Foundation, a Trust for children with RSD. That’s a whole other topic in itself. But here’s why that gave me this incredible realization: because her simple gesture triggered in me this realization that the definition or one of the definitions in the Oxford Dictionary is that gratitude is not just being willing to show appreciation and but also being willing to return the kindness. And I did that right away automatically. So without realizing it Terri taught me a very important lesson about myself and made me realise and grasp internally what gratitude actually is because I felt it and have been feeling that way ever since.
It’s a great feeling!
I encourage you to explore. Are you grateful truly? Do you know what it means? Possibly. Probably.
